President Donald J. Trump has delivered one of the most consequential demonstrations of American power in the Western Hemisphere in decades.
On January 3, U.S. forces carried out Operation Absolute Resolve, a large-scale military and law-enforcement operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Trump announced that the pair had been taken out of Venezuela and brought to the United States to face federal charges.
For supporters of the America First agenda, the message was unmistakable: the United States will no longer tolerate hostile regimes, transnational criminal networks, or governments that threaten American security from the Western Hemisphere.
A Mission Built on Strength — Not Endless Nation-Building
The operation followed months of preparation and pressure on the Maduro government. According to reporting on the mission, U.S. forces rehearsed extensively before Trump gave final approval for the operation. More than 150 aircraft were involved in the broader mission.
That level of preparation points to the central feature of Trump’s approach: overwhelming capability combined with a narrowly defined objective.
Rather than launching an open-ended campaign to remake Venezuelan society, the administration presented the mission as focused on removing Maduro and bringing him into the American justice system.
Maduro now faces federal prosecution in the United States. The charges include allegations involving narcoterrorism and drug trafficking, allegations he has denied. His case is scheduled for trial in June 2027.
America First Comes to the Western Hemisphere
For years, Washington watched Venezuela descend into economic and political turmoil while Maduro’s government remained entrenched.
Trump’s supporters argue that the old strategy — endless diplomatic pressure without decisive consequences — failed.
The new approach is different.
Secure America’s borders. Protect American citizens. Confront transnational criminal organizations. Protect the Western Hemisphere. Put American interests first.
That philosophy is at the heart of what supporters have dubbed the “Donroe Doctrine” — a modern, Trump-era interpretation of the Monroe Doctrine emphasizing that foreign adversaries and criminal networks should not be allowed to establish dangerous footholds in America’s neighborhood.
Venezuela’s Energy Wealth Is Also Impossible to Ignore
Venezuela possesses enormous energy resources, making its future strategically important to the United States and the global economy.
Trump has indicated that American companies could play a major role in rebuilding Venezuela’s oil industry following the political transition. The administration has framed economic recovery and energy production as important components of stabilizing the country.
For MAGA supporters, this represents economic realism rather than another multibillion-dollar foreign reconstruction project.
The argument is straightforward: if Venezuela is going to rebuild, American investment and American business should have a seat at the table — while American national interests remain the priority.
The Bigger Message
Operation Absolute Resolve represents more than the capture of one Venezuelan leader.
It is a statement about how the Trump administration intends to use American power.
The message to cartels, hostile governments and foreign powers seeking influence in the Western Hemisphere is clear: Washington under Trump is prepared to act.
The message to Americans is equally important: the administration says it intends to judge foreign policy by tangible results rather than diplomatic theater.
For Trump supporters, that is precisely what “America First” was supposed to mean.
Strength over hesitation. Deterrence over weakness. American interests over international bureaucracy.
The Venezuela operation has already changed the political landscape of the Western Hemisphere. What comes next — and whether the United States can help produce a stable, prosperous Venezuelan transition without becoming trapped in another endless foreign commitment — will determine the operation’s ultimate historical legacy.
But one conclusion is already impossible to miss:
Donald Trump promised that America would be respected again. In Venezuela, he demonstrated that promise with action.
