WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump moved quickly Wednesday to reverse a temporary Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pause on certain Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) traffic stops, saying the tactic remains an important part of the administration’s immigration enforcement strategy.
The temporary restriction was reportedly issued after two recent enforcement operations that resulted in fatal confrontations during attempts to detain individuals. Administration officials said the pause was intended to allow for a review of operational procedures.
Hours later, Trump publicly directed DHS to restore the use of traffic stops, arguing that immigration officers should retain the authority to use lawful enforcement tools while carrying out their duties.
In a post on Truth Social, the president described traffic stops as one of ICE’s most effective methods for locating and apprehending individuals who are in the country illegally and urged officers to continue their work while exercising sound judgment.
Homeland Security officials later confirmed that the administration would continue supporting ICE’s enforcement operations. The White House has consistently argued that stronger immigration enforcement is central to its broader border security agenda and has pledged to expand deportation efforts involving individuals with final removal orders.
The administration also emphasized that officers should continue operating within federal law and established agency policies while carrying out enforcement actions.
