America First Push Targets Canada’s Trade Policies as Republicans Demand Fair Treatment for U.S. Businesses

Republicans are renewing their push for tougher trade enforcement against Canada, arguing that American businesses deserve fair access to one of their largest export markets. Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) has introduced the CANADA Act, legislation aimed at investigating Canadian provincial policies that have restricted the sale of American-made alcoholic beverages.

Supporters of the bill say the measure reflects President Donald Trump’s long-standing America First trade strategy, which emphasizes protecting U.S. workers, manufacturers, and small businesses from what they view as unfair foreign trade practices.

According to Tenney, several Canadian provinces have limited or removed U.S. wines, beers, and spirits from government-controlled liquor stores, creating significant challenges for American producers. She argues that while Canada benefits from access to U.S. markets, American businesses should receive the same level of fair treatment.

The proposal also comes as the Trump administration continues reviewing North American trade policies. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has indicated that the United States will closely examine compliance with existing trade agreements, with administration officials emphasizing accountability over automatic renewals.

Republican lawmakers have also raised concerns about broader trade issues, including supply chain security and what they describe as loopholes that allow Chinese-made products to enter North America through existing trade arrangements. They argue stronger enforcement is necessary to protect American manufacturing and domestic industries.

Beyond trade, Tenney highlighted several priorities Republicans hope to advance, including extending Trump-era tax policies, strengthening election security measures, and expanding support for American businesses facing rising costs.

For many conservatives, the latest trade proposal represents another step toward reinforcing the America First agenda. Supporters say the goal is simple: ensure American workers, farmers, and manufacturers are treated fairly in international trade while encouraging trading partners to honor reciprocal market access.
