Texas Congressman Chip Roy delivered a strong warning during a weekend political show, arguing that Democrats are “endangering Americans” by blocking funding for key law‑enforcement agencies within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Roy said the ongoing dispute over government funding has created uncertainty for agencies responsible for border security and immigration enforcement.
Clash Over DHS Funding
According to Roy, Democrats have refused to support legislation that includes full funding for agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol. He argued that this approach threatens national security and weakens law‑enforcement efforts.
Roy said Republican leaders are considering a strategy that would first pass a short‑term funding bill and then approve longer‑term funding through a budget reconciliation process.
The Texas congressman warned that some lawmakers are hesitant to support temporary funding if it does not include guarantees that ICE and Border Patrol will receive long‑term support.
Trump’s Role in the Funding Debate
Supporters of Donald Trump say the president has urged Republicans to pass legislation that secures funding for border enforcement agencies.
Trump has also reportedly directed DHS officials to ensure employees continue to receive pay during the funding dispute while Congress works toward a solution.
Debate Over Senate Rules
Roy also criticized the U.S. Senate’s legislative process, particularly the filibuster rule, which often requires 60 votes to pass major legislation.
He suggested that lawmakers should consider changing the rules in emergency situations—such as a government shutdown—so funding measures could pass with a simple majority.
According to Roy, Congress must act more decisively to pass legislation addressing border security and government funding.
Political Tensions Continue
The debate over DHS funding reflects broader political divisions in Washington, where Republicans and Democrats remain sharply divided on immigration policy and federal spending priorities.
As negotiations continue, lawmakers face pressure to reach an agreement that ensures funding for federal agencies while addressing concerns raised by both parties.
