A tongue-in-cheek satirical campaign called the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has taken Indian social media by storm, amassing over 20 million Instagram followers in less than two weeks — surpassing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) account on the platform.

What began as an online joke in response to controversial remarks by India’s Chief Justice has quickly evolved into a major outlet for young Indians to express anger over unemployment, exam paper leaks, inflation, and what many perceive as political disconnect.

The Spark That Ignited the “Cockroach” Movement

The movement gained massive traction after Chief Justice Surya Kant allegedly compared some unemployed youth and social media activists to “cockroaches” during a court hearing. The remark, even after clarification, deeply hurt many young people already struggling with job scarcity.

This frustration boiled over further due to the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak scandal, which led to the cancellation of the medical entrance exam affecting over 2.20 million students.

Importantly, this is not an isolated incident. According to opposition parties and several media reports, India has witnessed 89 to 93 major paper leak cases across various competitive exams in the last 10 years during the Modi government’s tenure. Critics argue that despite promises of reform, such leaks have become disturbingly frequent, shaking public confidence in the education system.

The movement was founded by Abhijeet Dipke, an Indian student at Boston University. Within days, the party’s Instagram page exploded in popularity. It now posts sharp satirical memes, mock manifestos, and humorous critiques of governance, corruption, and economic challenges.

What US and International Media Are Reporting

Major outlets including CNN, Reuters, Al Jazeera, and CBS News have covered the phenomenon, noting it reflects deep-seated frustration among India’s massive youth population. More than a quarter of India’s 1.4 billion people are under 25, yet many face record-high youth unemployment and fierce competition for government jobs.

Recent triggers include the cancellation of the NEET-UG medical entrance exam after widespread paper leaks affecting over 2 million students. Protests have broken out in several cities, and some CJP supporters have taken the movement offline — dressing as cockroaches during demonstrations and even organizing clean-up drives.

International coverage has highlighted how the CJP has given voice to Gen Z discontent that traditional opposition parties have struggled to channel effectively. Some analysts see it as a warning sign for the ruling establishment ahead of future elections.

A Temporary Meme or Something More?

Supporters of the Modi government have dismissed the movement as a fleeting social media trend backed by opposition sympathizers. They argue it lacks real grassroots structure and will fade once the novelty wears off.

However, founder Dipke insists the anger is real. “This is not just online,” he has said. The group has already received tens of thousands of volunteer sign-ups and claims it will continue both digitally and on the ground.

Interestingly, the CJP’s X (Twitter) account was briefly restricted in India, which the group portrayed as further proof of establishment nervousness.

Strong Action by CJP

The Cockroach Janta Party has gone beyond memes. The group has launched an online petition demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the NEET-UG 2026 leak and systemic failures. As of now, the petition has crossed 720,000 signatures.

Inside the Cockroach Party Manifesto

The group has also released a 5-point satirical manifesto that mixes humor with serious demands. Key highlights include:

  • 50% reservation for women in Cabinet positions without increasing the strength of Parliament.
  • A 20-year ban on contesting elections for MLAs and MPs who switch parties (anti-defection).
  • A complete ban on giving post-retirement Parliament seats to Chief Justices and other constitutional post holders.
  • Scrapping rechecking fees by Central Board Secondary Education, which the group calls “blatant corruption.”
  • Strong support for students affected by repeated exam irregularities.

The manifesto describes the party as “secular, socialist, democratic, and lazy,” poking fun at traditional politics while highlighting genuine youth concerns.

What This Means for Indian Politics

While the Cockroach Janta Party is not a registered political party and positions itself purely as satire, its explosive growth reveals a concerning reality: a large section of India’s young population feels unheard and economically sidelined despite years of “India Shining” rhetoric.

Whether this remains a humorous protest movement or eventually influences real political discourse remains to be seen. For now, the humble cockroach has become an unlikely symbol of youthful rebellion in the world’s largest democracy.

A Wake-Up Call?

While the ruling BJP and its supporters have dismissed the movement as a temporary opposition-backed trend that lacks real structure, the sheer speed of its growth and the scale of the petition suggest deeper discontent among India’s massive youth population.

With over a quarter of India’s 1.4 billion citizens under 25 years old, issues like unemployment and education system failures carry significant political weight. Whether the Cockroach Janta Party remains a viral meme or evolves into something more substantial, it has already succeeded in putting youth anger firmly in the national spotlight.
