Officials Say Federal Agents Will Target Human Trafficking, Money Laundering, and Other Crimes at U.S. Airports
Washington, D.C. — A senior immigration official said federal agents are expanding their presence at airports across the United States, with the goal of identifying criminal activity while assisting with security operations.
Speaking in a recent interview, former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Tom Homan, said agents are now playing a broader role at major airports.
“We’re going to arrest criminals going through airports,” Homan said. “We’re going to look for human trafficking, money laundering, and other criminal activity.”
Coordination With Airport Security
According to officials, agents from ICE have been deployed in some locations to help manage traveler flow alongside officers from the Transportation Security Administration.
Authorities say the increased presence also allows federal investigators to identify individuals suspected of involvement in crimes such as human trafficking and financial crimes while they travel.
Airports are considered key transit points for organized criminal networks, making them a focus for law‑enforcement operations.
Focus on Trafficking and Organized Crime
Officials say the effort aims to detect and disrupt criminal networks that use air travel to move victims, illicit funds, or fugitives.
Investigators working with ICE often collaborate with other federal agencies and airport security teams to monitor suspicious travel patterns and identify individuals linked to ongoing investigations.
Law‑enforcement experts note that airports are frequently targeted by traffickers because of the large number of passengers moving through security checkpoints every day.
Debate Over Expanded Enforcement
The announcement comes amid ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement policies and federal law‑enforcement priorities. Supporters argue that expanded operations help protect travelers and combat trafficking, while critics have raised concerns about how enforcement activities might affect passengers.
Officials say their primary focus remains on criminal suspects rather than ordinary travelers.
Continuing Airport Security Efforts
Authorities say airport enforcement operations will continue as federal agencies work to strengthen security and prevent criminal activity linked to international and domestic travel.
With millions of travelers passing through U.S. airports every day, officials say cooperation between agencies will remain a key part of maintaining safety and disrupting criminal networks.
