Longtime Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen announced he will not seek re-election in his newly redrawn Tennessee district, claiming Republicans are “colonizing” Memphis and don’t have the best interests of voters in mind.
His departure has opened the door for candidates like Charlotte Bergmann, a Black Republican, Memphis native, and businesswoman who is now running hard for the seat.
The Irony Highlighted
During a recent interview, Bergmann directly addressed Cohen’s remarks. She noted the contradiction in a white Democrat complaining about losing a majority-Black district while she — a Black conservative — is actively campaigning to represent it.
Bergmann argued that many residents in the district are frustrated with rising crime, high taxes, increasing cost of living, and what she sees as failed Democratic leadership. She said voters are tired of being lectured and called racist for wanting basic safety and opportunity.
She also pushed back against outside Democratic figures, telling AOC that Southern voters “do not play that” when it comes to northern politicians trying to dictate local politics.
Analysis: Redistricting battles often turn heated, with both parties accusing the other of manipulation. Cohen’s “colonization” language is particularly strong and reflects how much Democrats have come to rely on majority-minority districts. Bergmann’s campaign challenges the assumption that Black voters will automatically support Democratic candidates — a growing theme in 2026 midterm races.
What’s at Stake
Tennessee’s shifting demographics and new district maps are giving Republicans opportunities in areas they previously struggled. Whether Bergmann can turn that into a win will depend on turnout and whether her message of law and order, economic relief, and rejecting identity politics resonates with voters.
This race is worth watching as an example of how redistricting, race, and voter priorities are reshaping Southern politics.
What do you think? Is Cohen’s criticism fair, or does Bergmann represent a changing tide in Tennessee?
