In a significant policy shift, the administration of Donald Trump has moved to reclassify medical marijuana under federal law—marking one of the most notable changes in U.S. drug policy in years.

According to officials, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche signed an order changing marijuana’s classification from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act.

For decades, marijuana has been listed as a Schedule I substance—placing it in the same category as drugs considered to have “no accepted medical use” and a high potential for abuse. The new designation as a Schedule III drug recognizes its potential medical value and significantly reduces regulatory barriers.

This change does not legalize marijuana at the federal level, but it does have several important implications:

  • Lower tax burden: Cannabis businesses may now qualify for standard federal tax deductions previously denied under strict Schedule I rules
  • Expanded research opportunities: Scientists will face fewer restrictions when studying medical marijuana
  • Regulatory flexibility: The industry could see smoother compliance processes and broader medical acceptance

A Turning Point for the Cannabis Industry

The decision is expected to have a ripple effect across the rapidly growing cannabis sector. Industry analysts say the move could attract more investment and legitimize medical marijuana in the eyes of healthcare providers and regulators.

While many U.S. states have already legalized marijuana in some form, federal classification has long been a barrier to banking access, research funding, and interstate commerce.

Despite the shift, marijuana remains illegal under federal law for recreational use. Lawmakers and advocacy groups are likely to continue pushing for broader reforms, including full legalization or further reclassification.

For now, the move to Schedule III signals a more moderate federal stance—one that acknowledges medical use while maintaining regulatory oversight.
