The 21st century won’t be won with just tanks and carriers; it will be won with silicon and algorithms. And right now, the United States is in the fight of its life.

This week, intelligence officials dropped a bombshell regarding a massive, coordinated “Distillation Campaign” by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to extract American AI breakthroughs. We aren’t just talking about copy-cat manufacturing anymore; we’re talking about the high-tech theft of the very “brains” that will run the future of global industry and defense.

The “Ding” Incident: Theft as a Business Model

If you want to know how bold the CCP has become, look no further than the case of Linwei Ding. A former Google engineer, Ding didn’t just steal the blueprints for Google’s latest Tensor Processing Unit (TPU)—technology at the heart of a trillion-dollar industry—he actually used that theft as a “unique selling point” for his own startup in China.

As former CIA officer Todd Lyones pointed out, this is China’s playbook: steal the breakthrough, create a low-cost copy-cat, and then use it to undercut and eventually dominate American interests. It’s a business model built on plunder.

Trump vs. The “Cooperation” Crowd

This escalation comes at a pivotal moment: just weeks before President Trump is scheduled to touch down in Beijing for a historic face-to-face with Xi Jinping.

For decades, the D.C. establishment followed the Nixon-era status quo, sweeping Chinese aggression under the rug in hopes of a “better relationship.” Joe Biden famously called them “competitors.” But President Trump put the China issue on the map, calling them what they actually are: adversaries.

While the President prepares to hold Beijing’s feet to the fire, some in Washington are still singing the same old tune. Senator Bernie Sanders is reportedly still pushing for “international cooperation” forums with Chinese AI experts. It begs the question: how do you cooperate with a regime whose entire AI strategy is based on jail-breaking your systems and downloading your hard-earned secrets?

The High Stakes of 2026

The timing of this intelligence release isn’t an accident. It’s a message. You don’t go to a country like China for a photo op; you go for results.

The 2020s and 30s will be defined by Quantum Computing and AI. If we don’t nip this theft in the bud now, we aren’t just losing money—we are losing control of the future. The next generation of leadership needs to understand that you can’t have “open vacations” and “honeymoons” in communist countries while they are actively trying to dismantle your technological edge.

President Trump made China’s theft front and center. Now, the question is what China has to offer in exchange for a seat at the table. They have lied for decades. If the President goes to Beijing, you can bet he isn’t going for a “fancy conference”—he’s going to protect American innovation.
