Vulnerable Democrat Under Fire as GOP Turns Up Heat in Critical Washington Swing District

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is facing growing pressure from Republicans as one of the nation’s most competitive House races heads toward Washington state’s August 4 top-two primary.

With control of the House likely to hinge on just a handful of swing districts this November, Republicans are intensifying their efforts to flip Washington’s 3rd Congressional District—a seat President Donald Trump carried in recent elections and one the Cook Political Report continues to rate as a true toss-up.

Republicans Say Perez Is Hiding Her Real Politics

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is accusing the two-term Democrat of presenting herself as a moderate while quietly aligning with the increasingly progressive agenda of the Democratic Party.

The latest criticism followed a local NPR interview in which Perez declined to directly answer questions about socialism, Washington Democrats’ policy platform, and state income tax proposals.

Conservative commentators argue that her reluctance to give clear answers reflects a broader campaign strategy: appealing as a centrist in a district that has steadily moved toward Republicans while remaining closely tied to the Democratic establishment.

NRCC spokesman Christian Martinez delivered one of the sharpest attacks yet.

“Fraud Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is too spineless to confront the socialist takeover of her party, too cowardly to even utter the word socialism, and too weak to condemn it. Her carefully manufactured political brand is a pathetic lie.”

Republicans also point to Federal Election Commission filings showing that Perez has received more than $2 million through the MGP Victory Fund, a fundraising vehicle connected to Washington Democratic Party organizations, arguing that her campaign is far more dependent on the party establishment than her independent image suggests.

A Race Republicans Believe They Can Win

Washington’s unusual election system places every candidate—Republican, Democrat and independent—on the same primary ballot. The top two finishers, regardless of party, advance to the November general election.

Perez is expected to emerge as the leading Democrat, while State Senate Minority Leader John Braun has become the clear Republican frontrunner. Braun, a Navy veteran, businessman and longtime state legislator, has secured President Donald Trump’s endorsement and is running on tax relief, public safety and stronger border security.

Political analysts expect the district to become one of the most expensive congressional battlegrounds in America during the fall campaign.

Pressure From Both Directions

Perez’s challenge isn’t coming only from Republicans.

She also faces a primary challenge from progressive Democrat Brent Hennrich, who argues that Perez has voted too often with Republicans on issues including immigration enforcement and spending bills.

That leaves the incumbent squeezed from both sides—criticized by the left for not being progressive enough and by Republicans for pretending not to be progressive at all.

Meanwhile, Republicans believe the district’s independent and working-class voters are increasingly skeptical of Democratic leadership in Washington.

The Stakes for House Control

With only a small number of competitive House districts nationwide, Washington’s 3rd District has become a major target for both parties.

Republicans view the seat as one of their strongest pickup opportunities as they seek to expand their House majority, while Democrats are investing heavily to protect an incumbent who narrowly won previous elections by appealing to moderate voters.

As ballots begin arriving ahead of the August 4 primary, Republicans are betting that voters will reject what they describe as carefully crafted campaign messaging and instead focus on Perez’s fundraising ties, voting record and reluctance to clearly distance herself from the Democratic Party’s increasingly progressive direction.

The primary will determine who advances to November, but the battle for Washington’s 3rd Congressional District is already shaping up to be one of the defining House races of the 2026 midterm elections.
