What investigators describe as a targeted attack against a single family has left an Illinois community reeling after five relatives were killed across multiple locations in East St. Louis. Authorities have now charged two teenagers—a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl—in connection with the killings, calling the violence an isolated but devastating attack rather than a random threat to the public.
The arrests came after an intensive, multi-agency investigation involving the Illinois State Police, East St. Louis Police Department, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, and prosecutors from the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The case has shocked residents not only because of the number of victims, but also because investigators say one of the suspects was a member of the victims’ own family.
Suspects Arrested After Weekend Manhunt
On July 14, prosecutors announced murder charges against 16-year-old Ja’ymeir Davis, who is being prosecuted as an adult. Authorities say Davis faces 12 felony charges, including:
- Five counts of first-degree murder
- Armed violence
- Other weapons- and violence-related offenses connected to the investigation
A 15-year-old girl was also charged through juvenile court. Prosecutors have indicated they intend to seek her transfer into adult court, though that process remains pending.
According to Illinois State Police, both suspects were arrested Sunday after troopers located them inside a vehicle at a nearby state park, bringing an end to the search that followed several days of violence.
Five Members of the Same Family Were Killed
Investigators say all five homicide victims belonged to the same extended family.
Authorities identified the victims as:
- Patricia May, 74
- Cherie May, 49
- Three younger relatives, ages 25, 24, and 21
Two additional people suffered injuries during the attacks but survived.
Police say the shootings occurred across three separate locations in East St. Louis, including a public park and residential areas, suggesting the victims were targeted over a period of time rather than during a single incident.
Investigators believe the violence began several days before the arrests.
Cherie May’s death appears to have occurred first. Her body was discovered after relatives reported her missing, while the remaining killings unfolded over the weekend.
Prosecutors Describe a Targeted Attack
During court proceedings, prosecutors alleged the attacks were deliberate and directed specifically at members of the May family.
Charging documents also include one particularly disturbing allegation: prosecutors say Davis removed Patricia May’s right thumb after her death. Investigators have not publicly explained why they believe that occurred, and the allegation has not yet been tested in court.
Because the criminal proceedings are in their early stages, prosecutors have released only limited information regarding the evidence supporting each charge.
Family Member Says One Suspect Was His Daughter
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the case emerged after Marcus May, who lost multiple relatives in the killings, spoke publicly.
May told reporters that the 15-year-old female suspect is his daughter.
According to his account, she had become increasingly angry with family members and had been dating Davis before the attacks.
“I can’t show her no sympathy,” Marcus May told reporters.
He said he lost:
- His mother
- His sister
- Two stepchildren
- A nephew
“…my whole family in one fell swoop,” he said.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive, and prosecutors have not yet detailed what evidence they believe establishes a conspiracy between the two suspects.
Court Proceedings Now Underway
Ja’ymeir Davis made his first appearance in St. Clair County court this week.
A judge ordered him held without bond, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
The public defender’s office has been appointed to represent him.
Meanwhile, proceedings involving the 15-year-old continue in juvenile court while prosecutors seek approval to move the case into adult criminal court.
Because she is a juvenile, authorities have released limited identifying information.

Police Say Community Was Not Randomly Targeted
Although the attacks occurred at several locations around East St. Louis, investigators have repeatedly emphasized that they do not believe the killings represented a random threat to the broader public.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly praised the cooperation between local and state investigators that led to the suspects’ arrests.
Officials said the rapid apprehension helped reassure residents while allowing detectives to begin processing multiple crime scenes and collecting ballistic, forensic, and digital evidence.
The investigation remains active, and additional evidence could emerge as prosecutors prepare for future court hearings.

Several major questions remain unanswered, including:

- Whether either suspect made statements to police.
