New York/Washington — President Donald Trump reiterated Friday that Iran appears interested in reaching a deal to resolve current tensions, while making clear that military options remain available if diplomacy falls short.

Speaking at a campaign event in Rockland County, New York, alongside Congressman Mike Lawler and former NFL quarterback Jackson Dart, Trump highlighted both foreign policy challenges and domestic economic wins. He specifically noted that oil prices are expected to drop significantly once the Iran situation is resolved.

The central flashpoint remains the Strait of Hormuz, a critical international waterway. Iran has reportedly discussed charging fees with Oman and shared maps suggesting expanded influence in the area. Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly rejected any toll-like system, stating it would set a dangerous precedent for other global shipping lanes.

Trump emphasized two non-negotiable red lines: Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon, and the Strait of Hormuz must remain open for free international navigation. “We have total control of the Strait right now,” he said, referencing the current U.S. naval presence.

Plan B on the Table

Administration officials have confirmed they are preparing contingency plans (often referred to as “Plan B”) should Iran refuse to compromise on uranium enrichment or attempt to restrict shipping. Several former military officials and Trump-era diplomats appearing on Fox News suggested that while negotiations continue, patience is limited and targeted action could be considered if progress stalls.

Trump also made a personal announcement during the day, stating he would miss his son Don Jr.’s wedding in order to remain in Washington to oversee the situation. “My love for the United States of America does not allow me to do so,” he posted.

Broader Context

The developments come as the Trump administration continues pushing an America First agenda — from lifting the SALT tax deduction cap to encouraging manufacturing investment in New York and across the country. Supporters argue this combination of strength abroad and economic focus at home reflects effective leadership during uncertain times.

As Memorial Day weekend begins, many are watching closely to see whether Iran chooses a diplomatic path or if the U.S. will need to escalate its response to protect global shipping and prevent nuclear proliferation.
