A routine shoplifting investigation in northern Mississippi has turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after an officer-involved shooting left a one-year-old child dead and an adult critically injured.
The incident occurred Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of a Walmart in Senatobia, a small community located about 40 miles south of Memphis. What began as a response to a reported theft quickly escalated into a rapidly unfolding confrontation that is now under investigation by state authorities.
What Happened?
According to preliminary information released by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), officers from the Senatobia Police Department and deputies from the Tate County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a suspected shoplifting incident shortly after 2 p.m.
Authorities say officers encountered two adults who were attempting to leave the area in a vehicle with a child inside. As officers moved to stop the vehicle, investigators say the driver allegedly drove toward law enforcement personnel.
The MBI stated that an officer then fired at the vehicle before it left the scene.
The vehicle later arrived at a nearby hospital, where medical personnel discovered that a one-year-old child had suffered a gunshot wound. The child was pronounced dead. An adult occupant was also hospitalized with critical injuries.
No officers were reported seriously injured during the encounter.
State Investigation Underway
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has assumed responsibility for examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the sequence of events leading up to the officer’s decision to fire.
Investigators are collecting physical evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses. Once completed, findings will be turned over to prosecutors for review.
